Teaching literacy
Teaching every child to read is one of the core purposes of the federation - it is an obsession! Every child will learn to decode text quickly and effortlessly so that all efforts can go into comprehension of what is being read. Children who are learning to read will use Ruth Miskin’s highly acclaimed ReadWriteInc programme. In our five years of using this programme we have never come across a child who does not learn to read.
Once children are reading fluently, they move (usually in Key Stage 2) to a text-based approach using our own specially written project.
Reading at home is encouraged at every stage. Once children are decoding effectively, they start a home reading programme known as Accelerated Reader. Children choose from a wide range of texts in the class library. Each child then reads his/her chosen book at home. A computer based quiz is taken at school the following week. Results are recorded and parents receive regular reports on progress. It is essential that every child brings his/her reading book to school on Accelerated Reader quiz day. It is very hard to do the quiz without the book!
